Dustin Misiak joins Team Westin!

Dustin Misiak joins Team Westin!

Dustin discovered fishing at the age of 12 when he was on vacation with his parents at the beautiful Lake Garda in Italy.

There he spotted a lot of black bass and small minnows and his direct instinct was to catch them! In the young boy’s heart a small seed was planted and today fishing is his big passion. Back in Germany he started to fish for breams, roach and carps and soon the predators like perch and zander become more and more interesting.

Today he’s caught over 1500 zanders from the shore but still he appreciates every single strike! Hamburg and its port are a perfect place for him to improve his fishing-technique and Dustin is always thinking “outside the box”.

His favorite fish is truly the zander but also the perch is a highly respected fish. We are glad to have this young and passionate angler aboard our Team!

Mustad fishing report november

Mustad fishing report november

Sportfishing journalist Bo Hall from Sweden gathered a couple of friends and went down to the blue water – paradise Kenya for some hardcore fishing.

In these waters you can hook up with super strong GTs, kingfish and barracudas.
Bo Hall and his friends managed to hook up with and land all these species, and the fish did put both the men and the hooks to the test.

Fishing with both popper, speedjigs and bait they used Mustad Big Game in size 8/0, and after some exhausting fights the hooks didn’t show any damage what so ever!
I guess we all can agree on that we are a little bit jealous at Bo Hall and his team, especially when the when its soon winter up here and the lakes are starting to freeze over!

Enjoy the rest of the week!

Quantum Cabo for extreme adventures

Quantum Cabo for extreme adventures

Quantum’s Cabo has long been a consistent hitter in saltwater, but now it comes with a totally redesigned and modernistic lightweight frame with more metal inside and out than it’s competition.

The Cabo comes loaded with a huge, strong center shaft complimented by stronger threads to provide all the lockdown power necessary, and a super-sized, water tight drag for when braided lines are at work.

Massive ceramic and carbon fiber washers sit ready to resist heat in a sealed Magnum CSC™ drag system to allow line to slip smoothly off the spool with whatever resistance you choose to dial in up to 55 pounds.

Speaking of corrosion free, this “airy” looking reel features a clutch seal to prevent water and debris from entering the clutch housing and causing it to slip. Further eliminating corrosion is a re-designed line slider made of stainless that will last a lifetime. Further solidifying the new version Cabo is a doubly-secured oscillating gear and slider to eliminate ‘slop’ or ‘play’ when the reel is placed under higher loads.

And a Quantum exclusive TiMag® titanium bend-resistant bail system with magnetic trip makes for the most enduring line management system in the business. Protecting the sleek frame is Saltguard™ 2.0 – which contains a Quantum exclusive SCR™ Alloy that is impurity free to prevent a source for corrosion to set in. The SCR Alloy is then covered in Quantum’s proprietary coating process to further prevent rust. Available in 40, 50, 60 and an 80 size, with 10 bearings.

Key features of the new Cabo generation:

New SCR base aluminum : Eliminates corrosion and improved strength
New Saltgard 2.0: Superior corrosion resistance
New Sealed Magnum CSC Drag: Extreme power, ultra smooth drag
New Ultra hard PT Gearing: Durable ultra smooth gearing
New gear system support: Durable under high loads, more secure clutch

Garmin Introduces DownVü and SideVü Scanning Sonar

Garmin Introduces DownVü and SideVü Scanning Sonar

Garmin International Inc., the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced DownVü and SideVü, their down and side-scanning sonar technology that provides high resolution imagery and excellent precision for what’s in the water below and beside the boat.

“Garmin is excited to bring scanning sonar to the market for our customers,” said Dan Bartel, vice president of worldwide sales.  “For anglers of all types, it’s crucial to have a comprehensive understanding of what is directly below and to the side of boat when out on the water.  Now, with DownVü and SideVü, we provide that valuable insight on a large range of Garmin marine products.”

DownVü

Garmin DownVü is a high-frequency sonar that provides a near picture quality representation of objects, structure and fish that the boat is passing over.  With a finer, concentrated sonar signal scanning a designated area, DownVü provides excellent resolution with great target separation in fresh and saltwater.

New echo™ dv Series

An updated line of echo fishfinders will now support DownVü.  Whether it’s a 4-inch grayscale echo unit or one with full color display, anglers can receive the same clear precision of DownVü on a dedicated fishfinder with a DownVü transducer.  This updated echo series will also support a 50kHz transducer, further expanding the functionality to saltwater anglers.

New echoMAP™ dv Series

With the introduction of DownVü, Garmin will also release a new series of echoMAP units with built-in DownVü capability.  The echoMAP 50dv and 70dv boast the same vibrant screens and capabilities as the previously released echoMAP series but now add DownVü scanning technology.

Updated GPSMAP® 500 and 700 Series

For any angler who’s already purchased a new GPSMAP 500 or 700 series device without built-in DownVü, a free software update will be available through the Garmin website that allows these units to utilize DownVü scanning.  Then, with a DownVü transducer (adapter required for some models), the GPSMAP unit will provide full DownVü technology at the angler’s fingertips.

New GPSMAP 800 and 1000 Series

The new GPSMAP 800 and 1000 series have built-in DownVü scanning sonar with CHIRP technology and supports SideVü and DownVü with CHIRP scanning sonar technology with optional GCV™ 10 sonar black box.  The GPSMAP 800 and 1000 series serve as a perfect complement to existing GPSMAP 500 and 700 series units.

SideVü

Much like DownVü, SideVü is high-frequency sonar that gives a clear image of fish or structure that are located to the sides of the boat.  This true-to-life picture of what’s below the water’s surface helps identify the most ideal spots and structures for fishing.  With noise suppression providing for an ultra crisp, high-resolution image, it’s easy to see where the best place to fish will be.

GCV 10

The same CHIRP technology that was showcased in the overwhelmingly popular GSD™ 26 sounder box has been built into the GCV 10.  The GCV 10 sonar black box, coupled with the SideVü and DownVü transducer, adds SideVü and DownVü with CHIRP scanning sonar technology to compatible Garmin echoMAP and GPSMAP devices.  CHIRP sweeps a range of frequencies to provide noise suppression, more power on targets and target separation, allowing the GCV 10 to provide crystal clear and near-picture quality images.

Combined with the chartplotter’s HD-ID™ sonar, the angler is provided an excellent search and confirmation tool for advanced fishfinding in fresh and saltwater.  The GCV 10 has three built-in network ports to share DownVü and SideVü information as well as other networking information, such as radar and user data, across supported GPSMAP products.  Whether the fish is below the boat or to the sides, the GCV 10 gives an ultra-clear representation to help the angler find that next fishing hot spot.  GCV 10 is compatible with the echoMAP 70 series and the GPSMAP 700, 800 and 1000 series.

The new echo DownVü series will be available in Q4 of 2013.  The new echoMAP DownVü series and GCV 10 sounder black box will be available in Q1 of 2014.  For a full list of compatible units and for more information, go to www.garmin.com/marine2014.

Garmin’s marine business segment is a leading provider of navigation and communication equipment to retail and OEM customers.  Garmin’s portfolio includes the industry’s most sophisticated array of chartplotters and touchscreen multifunction displays, sonar, high-definition radar, autopilot, high-resolution mapping, sailing instrumentation and other products and services that are known for innovation, reliability, and ease-of-use.

Lars Öhman – joins Team Westin!

Lars Öhman – joins Team Westin!

The man with 127 pikes over 10 kilos on his conscience! In the beginning of his successfully fishing-carrier he got an instant interest for pikes and slowly but surely the fascination for the larger individuals increased.

He caught his first pike over 10 kilos in 1996 and that’s when it all started… he lost it all! Lars decided to dedicate his life for hunting down those brutal and impressive big pikes. In 2001 he started jerkbait-fishing and together with his friends they experienced great fishing in shallow lakes. Hundreds and hundreds of pikes later Lars got tired of it and started to fish in deeper lakes using longer rods, softlures and crank baits.

Today his favorite method is spin or trolling in unexplored pike-waters. To this date he caught 127 pikes over 10 kilos where top three are monsters over 14 kilos! With that in mind we can also add that Lars is only 34 years old, and still going strong…

Lars belongs to the top segment of pike anglers in Sweden. Pikes swear upon him and when he throws out that big lure in the water it’s directly aimed for the big ones. With the risk of being too cocky we are extremely proud to have “probably the best pike-angler in the world” aboard, most welcome!

Radical test angler catches new American carp record

Radical test angler catches new American carp record at 54lb 8oz!

Quantum Radical test fisherman Raphaël Biagini submitted us his latest report: "I am very happy to announce that I had the incredible opportunity to catch the biggest carp ever caught by a carp angler with modern fishing techniques (Catch and Release) in the U.S.A.! This historic catch happened in New Jersey State on Sunday, in the morning of November 11th, on the bank of a “small” river. I might add that what I call a small size here is a bit different from what we know as small in Europe.

Unfortunately I cannot reveal the exact location because I have to keep the name of this river a secret out of respect to the local anglers, who were kind enough to share their knowledge with me. In addition carp fishing in the United States is not like it is practised in Europe: the catch and release concept is not widespread here (while bow hunting for carp seems to be more common), it would be regrettable if this fish could not live in peace.

This amazing specimen is a common carp, 98 cm long with a weight of 54 lb 8 oz (24.7 kg)! After an amazing fight and lots of great pictures taken I had the pleasure to put her back in her natural environment… A magic moment!

20th catfish over 100 kg‏

20th catfish over 100 kg‏

Stefan Seuß and Benjamin Gründer celebrated a special milestone on one of their latest Black Cat Guiding Tours. On 4 November, the 20th catfish of over 100 kg (220 lb) to be landed during their guided angling tours hit the net. However, anybody who thinks that, after so many giant specimens, the catches are a matter of routine would be vastly mistaken. Each and every one of the monster fish requires both angler and guides to give their all. As fate would have it, it was team angling colleague Sven Weide of the Quantum Sea Team who landed the milestone 100-kg catfish.

And even an angler with Weide's experience of big fish (his catches include a halibut of over 150 kg) had his hands full with this one. He recalls: "Just after we started the fight from the dinghy, the fish planted itself under a fallen, sunken tree. And it wouldn't move. Heavy mist added to the difficulty of attempting to land the fish. Finally, with the help of Stefan Seuß and a second boat, Benjamin and I worked the fish free. It was perilous because we had to cut the tangled line and tie it together again in the blink of an eye." In fact, the happy anglers had to free the giant catfish from obstacles three times before it was finally landed. When it came to weighing and measuring the monster, the tape recorded a length of 2.52 m while the digital scales stopped their rapid ascent at a breathtaking 105 kg (232 lb).

The events unfolded on the middle reaches of the Po in northern Italy, the base of www.wels-camp-am-po.de run by Bernhard and Ute Heiner. The river was just slightly higher than normal at the time of the catch, which is somewhat unusual in the guides' experience. Extreme high waters of up to five metres above normal level and persistent rain are normally the order of the day at that time of year. However, Sven Weide and his two Quantum-Sea colleagues Andre Joskzo and Gunter Cohrs were able to enjoy warm days of up to 20°C on the river. The milestone catfish fell to a deadbait fished on an underwater rig weighted with a stone.

115-pound carp brace

115-pound carp brace

Radical-Carp newcomer Tobias Krämer embarked on a night session on a large German gravel pit in the Ruhr area to test some new boilies for the 2014 season - and bagged a brace of giant carp.

Krämer landed the first, a huge common carp of 25.1 kg (55 lb 6'), in the late afternoon using a Radical-Honey tiger nut topped with an artificial tiger nut over the area which he baited up before.

The next morning brought another colossal common that tipped the scales at 27 kg (55 lb 9') after taking a 20mm Vampire Garlic test boilie.

With the new Radical baits about to be launched on the market, this latest result is further evidence of the high quality and attraction of Radical Boilies.

The Joker laughs last on over-fished waters

The Joker laughs last on over-fished waters

With spinning enjoying huge popularity, many known predator swims are increasingly being over-fished. You will often hear: "the swim has been fished to death", "the swim is burnt out" or "it's not worth going there any more!".

In some cases, it may well be that the fish are avoiding the swim or at least not visiting it as regularly as in the past. However, it could also be that the fish are still in the swim but are stubbornly and persistently ignoring all familiar or unnatural baits.

My buddy Ralf and I visited one such swim on a sunny autumn day. We actually wanted to avoid it since even baitfish did not bring the desired success on previous visits. However, we decided to give the Quantum Joker a chance as it would surely be unfamiliar to the fish here.

The very first cast produced a bite and a medium-sized perch. A good omen and Ralf needed no more persuasion. We had found the lure that would make the perch drop their guard. Then, after two missed bites, I hooked a good 45-cm perch right in front of my feet but lost it straight away. I was still voicing my disappointment when Ralf shouted: "Don't worry. I've got one now!" And what a one it was! The rod was bent to the limit and I was on my way to take photos and help land the monster.

Everything ran smoothly and the tape measure read 49.5 cm. Just short of that magical threshold but, of course, we were still ecstatic. A première for the Joker and a new personal best. The interesting thing was that we weren't retrieving the Joker along the bottom but around two metres below the surface.

One thing is for sure. I won't be going fishing for perch again without the Joker. And the same goes for Ralf.

Jimmy Andersson – joins Team Westin!

Jimmy Andersson – joins Team Westin!

For sea-anglers in Scandinavia Jimmy needs no introduction…but here’s one just for the good cause. He’s the owner of the successful sea-fishing travel company - Nordic Sea Angling and has been working close with us for many years.

Jimmy has been fishing since childhood and tried out the most. In his twenties the sea fishing took over completely and he began to fish in Norway fairly early on. He was immediately captured by the fishing and the incredible nature. He loves to search for and test new fishing locations and big waves, ice-cold water and insanely big fish is a piece of cake and just a regular day for Jimmy.

In 2004 he started his travel company Nordic Sea Angling with great success, (which today has four destinations and 34 boats located around North part of Norway). He has a long list of merits with insanely big “back-killing” fish. A cod on staggering 33,65 kilos and couple halibuts over 50 kilos just to mention a few.

The last years he got more and more hooked on the popper- and speedjigging fishing, and he has recently start up a new destination in Panama. As you understand it’s all about sea-fishing and we are proud and happy to have Jimmy in the team. We can also reveal that Jimmy is the inspiration behind the name of our successful seajig called “Slim Jim”. The full story, we keep for ourselves…We welcome this hardcore salty angler aboard!
